5 Things I Wish I Knew as a New Mum

When I look back on those early days of motherhood – the bleary-eyed mornings, the sweet baby snuggles, the feeling that everything was new – I often wish I could go back and give that version of me a hug… and a few little nuggets of truth.

So, to all the new mums out there navigating this wild, beautiful ride, here are five things I wish I knew when I was just starting out.

1. You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

Spoiler alert: no one does.

I used to think there was some magical moment when I’d suddenly feel like a pro – when I’d know exactly what each cry meant or how to settle bub in seconds. Truth? That moment doesn’t really come. You learn as you go. You try, adjust, and trust your instincts more each day. You’re not “winging it” – you’re growing into it.

2. Rest Is Productive

It’s easy to fall into the trap of needing to “get things done” while the baby naps – laundry, dishes, emails… but rest is just as important. Actually, more important.

If I could go back, I’d let myself nap, sit in the sun with a tea, or simply breathe for a moment. A rested mama is a more present, patient mama – and that matters way more than folded towels.

3. Feeding Your Baby Shouldn’t Come with Pressure

I wish someone had told me sooner: how you feed your baby doesn’t define you as a mum. Whether it’s breastfeeding, pumping, formula, or a mix of everything – what matters most is that your baby is nourished, loved, and thriving.

I spent far too much energy worrying about what was “best,” when in reality, the best choice is the one that works for you and your baby. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to feeding. If you're feeding with love and doing your best? You're already winning.

4. Ask for Help – And Accept It

I thought I had to prove I could do it all. Supermum style. But asking for help doesn’t make you weak – it makes you wise.

Let someone bring you dinner. Say yes to a friend folding washing. Hand bub to your partner while you take a shower. It really does take a village – and you deserve support.

5. The Days Are Long, But the Years Are Short

Everyone says this… and they’re right.

There were moments I thought would never end (hello, cluster feeding at 3am) – but they passed. And now, those hazy newborn days feel like a blur of softness and magic.

Take more photos. Sniff that newborn head. Cry when you need to, laugh as much as you can, and remember – you’re doing an amazing job.

Final Thought

If you’re a new mum reading this, just know – you’re not alone. Every mother has stood where you are: uncertain, overwhelmed, full of love, and learning as she goes.

You’ve got this. And if no one has told you today: you are doing so well.
